Reading Time: 3 Minutes
O that you would tear open the heavens and come down . . . to make your name known (Isaiah 64.1-2).
The first verses of John declare that the cry of Isaiah’s heart for God to come down to earth to make God’s character and plan for the world perfectly known has taken place through Jesus of Nazareth.
Jesus is God who has moved into our neighborhood to show us how to live the best life possible.
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God.
In the beginning . . .
How did John know what was “in the beginning”? How did he know what was already there before the world came into existence?
He walked for three years with Jesus and learned from him on a daily basis. God’s promised Holy Spirit became his teacher after Jesus’ cross and resurrection.
What is meant by “Word”?
We long to know what people important to us are thinking. We get this deeply desired knowledge when they talk to us. God talks to the human race specifically and specially in Jesus.
The Word was with God, and the Word was God.
God is a person and God has always had a deeply personal relationship with his Son.
Jesus is in the full sense of the word, “God with us.” God has opened the heavens and come down to us!
The Most Important Study of All
The words and deeds of Jesus are the deeds and words of God. If this is not true, Jesus is a fraud and a liar. If it is true, we do well to make the study of Jesus’ life the most important aspect of our life.
Dear God, our words are too small to express our praise of your character that you have come to us. To know that you desire a personal relationship with us is a gift beyond reckoning. Please help us study the life of Jesus, so we may become more like him.
Please take time to read slowly and prayerfully through the first 18 verses of John’s first chapter. These verses are like the Table of Contents for the entire book.
