The Table of Contents of John’s Gospel
John 1.3-5
All things came into being through him, and without him not one thing came into being. What has come into being 4 in him was life, and the life was the light of all people. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it.
Jesus is the Agent of Creation
Just to be clear, the Word – Jesus Christ – was the agent of all of God’s creation. Look at verse 3 again and note that nothing is in existence without Jesus.
What does that say about our relationship with Jesus?
The Invitation to Abundant Life
John uses poetic words to invite us into union with the Word/Jesus (see vs. 3-4). As we do this, we come to life. It is as if John is saying, “You were made by him. Now, come back to him.”
This is the first invitation in John to respond to Jesus, but there will be many more. I hope all of the readers of real-voices.com will take advantage of Jesus’ wonderful gift.
What Jesus’ Light Does for Us
The other night I had dinner with four former felons. They are no longer felons, but servants and lovers of Jesus. Jesus’ light turned on the “light” in these four and has granted them the life that they always wanted.
Let’s never take for granted the miracles that union with Jesus produces.
The Preview of the Cross and Resurrection
The first 18 verses of John’s Gospel are like the Table of Contents for the entire book. Verse 5 points out how Jesus’ light shines in the dark places of people’s life. The darkness tried to overcome Jesus’ light on the cross, but the resurrection proved that his light is stronger than any darkness.
Praise God that his light has conquered the darkness of our lives!
Today’s Prayer
Let’s pray with Saint Augustine today: “O God, you have made us for Yourself, and our hearts are restless until they find their rest in You.”
Your Turn
Please join me in prayerfully considering these opening verses in John. Make a choice to study Jesus, his life and actions. Please encourage the readers of real-voices.com with your comments. Thanks.
Thank you, Bob! May the LORD raise an army of people that recognize Jesus to be the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.
