Don’t Discount What Jesus Has Done.

God has revealed his character and nature through his Son, Jesus Christ. This is the most significant event in human history.

Jesus answers the question, “Who is God, and what’s on his mind?” How can any issue be more important than knowing and doing the will of our Creator?

The unfortunate truth is that it is easy to be completely distracted by our culture. This was the case in the first century, just as it is today.

That is why the author of Hebrews challenged his readers.

“Therefore we must pay greater attention to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away” (Hebrews 2.1).

Don’t miss “therefore.” It connects what the author has previously written to the next theme.

The exalted Son of God, who is the heir of all things, has spoken (Hebrews 1.1-2).

Since this exalted One has spoken, we need to pay attention to his message. Failure to give attention will lead to “drifting away.”

Pay Attention

Rudy Ross and I produce a YouTube video on the Bible passages that my blog covers. Rudy sent me a text today and said that the verses of yesterday’s article challenged him to live closer to the Lord.

I responded by texting Rudy that the study of the Letter to the Hebrews has had the same effect on me.

God uses Bible study to confront my sins and unbelief. As Paul wrote, he cleanses me “with the washing of water by the word” (Ephesians 5.26).

I don’t know of any better way to “pay greater attention to what we have heard” than through daily Bible reading and prayer.

Reading without prayer runs the risk of enlightening the mind, but not the heart. Prayer without being informed by the Bible can be unfocused and self-centered.

When Bible reading is accompanied by prayer, we have the greatest opportunity to fix our attention on the Lord.

Our Response to God’s Revelation

The one people of God, whose existence begins with Abraham and continues in our current age, owe their existence to the gracious speaking of God.

God has spoken through every means possible, including angels and ultimately through his exalted Son.

We risk great peril by not paying attention to what he has said.

For if the message declared through angels proved valid, and every transgression or disobedience received a just penalty,

How will we escape if we neglect so great a salvation? (Hebrews 2.2-3)

The Bible makes it clear that genuine hearing and faith result in obedience. Also, obedience is not possible without faith and hearing.

If you see a “No Trespassing” sign, ignore it, and cross into another’s property, you have not paid attention or heard the message.

To hear from angels and the Son of God, only to disregard their message is to court disaster.

From the call of Abraham (Genesis 12) to the present day, God is at work to give abundant life (John 10.10) to humans.

We have the opportunity to be part of the multitude of people who know and do God’s will.

How can we neglect this great gift from God and fail to pay attention to him?

My prayer for all of us is that we will respond in faith and obedience to what Jesus has spoken to us.
