After whom are you modeling your life?

There was a very popular boy in my high school class. Even though it has been years ago, I remember when I decided that I would be like him.

I played golf in school and modeled my swing and style after Julius Boros. You may not have heard of him, but he played in the Arnold Palmer era.

When I first started preaching, I wanted to sound like a radio preacher from South Carolina.

What about you? What model of success or spirituality do you want to emulate?

This is what Paul said to his partner in ministry, Timothy.

So do not be ashamed of the testimony about our Lord or of me his prisoner. Rather, join with me in suffering for the gospel, by the power of God (2 Timothy 1.8).

To say that you follow a crucified Jew or an imprisoned preacher would have seemed completely senseless in the first century.

What does it take to model our lives after Jesus?

We have be familiar with what Jesus thought and how he conducted his life.

Reading the Gospels will help us understand Jesus’ actions and attitudes.

A personal relationship with Jesus is the best way live like him. Talking to Jesus on a regular way will increase our ability to model our lives after him.

Why model our lives after Jesus?

Paul encouraged his partners and friends to follow his example. He supplied reasons why following Jesus and his example is the best choice we can make.

He has saved us and called us to a holy life—not because of anything we have done but because of his own purpose and grace. This grace was given us in Christ Jesus before the beginning of time,

But it has now been revealed through the appearing of our Savior, Christ Jesus, who has destroyed death and has brought life and immortality to light through the gospel (2 Timothy 1.9-10)

Paul piled reasons upon reasons about why we should model our lives after Jesus. Here are two.

(1) Saved and Called – Jesus has rescued humans from the guilt and harm of sin.

In addition, he has called us to join God’s gracious purposes in the world. We partner with Jesus in his work by living a holy life.

Holy living is living a Jesus-kind-of-life. We will be part of God’s purposes when we live like our Savior.

(2) The Future – The instant we receive Jesus as our Lord and Savior, we begin eternal life.

As we strive to live like Jesus, we will live the best life possible with heaven to come.

Think about it!

The greatest Being to walk the face of the earth has made it possible for humans to live like him.

We have the chance to model our lives after his magnificent life.

The best choice we can make is to strive to live like him.
