When You Vote, Look for This.

My father was involved in politics from before I was born until I was 25 years old.

My experience with politics makes me very skeptical when politicians attempt to use religious positions to further their elections.

I believe both Republicans and Democrats use religion for their own electoral goals.

In today’s YouTube video, I describe how my father used religion to get votes and the effect that had on me as a young man.

Instead of listening to political rhetoric, voters should look at the actions of politicians.

Paul was not concerned with the Roman government when he wrote to Timothy. Nero blamed Christians for the great fire in Rome and later arrested Paul.

Roman Emperors and senators were corrupt and the Roman Empire was held together because of the integrity of the army’s leadership.

Paul wrote to Timothy about the kind of leaders the church should follow. The key issue was exemplary behavior, not clever speech.

He said, “Command and teach these things. Let no one despise your youth, but set the believers an example in speech and conduct, in love, in faith, in purity” (1 Timothy 4.11-12).

Jesus said his followers were to be the “salt of the earth” and the “light of the world” (Matthew 5.13-14).

When our behavior exemplifies speech and conduct that displays love, faith, and purity, we will be the seasoning and light that the world needs.

Examples are Important

“You’re not electing a pastor. You’re electing a politician.” I have heard this saying stated as if it were the gospel truth.

If you’re old enough, you may remember the criticism directed toward President Clinton, who committed adultery with Monica Lewinsky.

Someone said referring to Clinton and that character counts, “If a man will cheat on his wife, how can the country trust him?”

Somewhere between the above two opinions of politicians is a balanced understanding of the situation.

I am not advocating for either Republican or Democratic candidates. I am asking and praying that America elects officials that exemplify character and maturity.

I have more questions than answers for governmental leaders. I am thankful that we read God’s word and ask that he give us leaders who are examples in speech and conduct, in love, in faith, in purity.
