Before you read further into this article, take a minute to focus your attention on the presence of Jesus in your life.
Please read this section as Jesus’ message to you today. What is he telling you to do and what will be your response?
Jesus: After this the Lord appointed seventy others and sent them on ahead of him in pairs to every town and place where he himself intended to go (Luke 10.1).
You: Thank you Jesus that you came into my life, so I could be your friend. I want other people to experience you in the same way that you have allowed me to know you.
If you want me to prepare the way for other people to experience you, I will do it. Please help me.
Jesus: “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore ask the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest (Luke 10.2).
You: Jesus, you are the Lord of the harvest. I will pray regularly for you to call other people like me to prepare the way for people to meet you.
Jesus: “Go on your way. See, I am sending you out like lambs into the midst of wolves.
“Carry no purse, no bag, no sandals; and greet no one on the road. Whatever house you enter, first say, ‘Peace to this house!’
“And if anyone is there who shares in peace, your peace will rest on that person; but if not, it will return to you.
“Remain in the same house, eating and drinking whatever they provide, for the laborer deserves to be paid. Do not move about from house to house.
“Whenever you enter a town and its people welcome you, eat what is set before you;
“Cure the sick who are there,
“And say to them, ‘The kingdom of God has come near to you'” (Luke 10.3-9).
You: Jesus, I feel like a lamb that is surrounded by wolves. I worry about what kind of reaction I will get from other people.
Jesus: That’s why I told you “to be wise as serpents and innocent as doves” (Matthew 10.16).
Depend on the power of the Holy Spirit and discover the most loving and kind way to approach people.
You: What about having no resources? What’s that all about?
Jesus: I am sending you out empty handed, so you will depend on me.
As you trust me, you will learn the full meaning of my words, “I am the vine, you are the branches. Those who abide in me and I in them bear much fruit, because apart from me you can do nothing” (John 15.5).
You: How can I best represent you to other people?
Jesus: Notice how relationships are essential to preparing the way for my entry into another person’s life.
You represent me. If my qualities of love, joy, patience, kindness, and so forth are part of your life, they will be more open to receiving me.
You are not there to win a battle of words about me. You are there to introduce me to them.
Like any good physician, listening is important. If you give a listening ear to them, they will be more willing to hear your message.
If you are able to bring a measure of health to their lives, they will sense that you are genuinely concerned about their life.
You: I’m ready to follow your directions. Please help me.
Jesus: You can count on the power and presence of the Holy Spirit for help.
One way to talk with Jesus is to put ourselves in the middle of an event from one of the Gospels.
We can talk with Jesus and sense what he would say to us. Please experiment with this and see what kind of difference it makes in your prayer time.
We are given the immense privilege of a friendship relationship with Jesus. Talking and listening to him like this is one way we can enjoy that relationship.
Let’s not miss the awesome opportunity that God gives his friends. We can prepare the way for Jesus to come to the life of a someone we know.
Please ask God to send laborers and offer your services to God to be a laborer in his harvest.
Rudy Ross and I approach this Scripture passage from a different angle than I have written in the blog. Please take a few minutes to listen to the video. We always appreciate Rudy’s insights.
