Important Information from the One Who Came from Heaven

Reading Time: 3 Minutes

Jesus came from above to give us inside information about life.

John 3.31-32The one who comes from above is above all; the one who is of the earth belongs to the earth and speaks about earthly things. The one who comes from heaven is above all. 32 He testifies to what he has seen and heard, yet no one accepts his testimony.

Jesus comes straight from heaven. We come from birth in the hospital. Jesus brings us inside information from heaven. We usually speak out of our own best thinking.

I think this is one of the most important passages in the Gospel. John tells us that Jesus is the only One, who has inside information about what is most important in life. As we read the account of his actions and words, we have an opportunity to base our lives on Jesus’ inside information about what is most important.

We can’t go out and buy a bag of truth.

John 3.33-34Whoever has accepted his testimony has certified this, that God is true. 34 He whom God has sent speaks the words of God, for he gives the Spirit without measure.

God does not have a sacred store where we can go to purchase a bag of truth. Instead, he is true and truth in the very nature of his being. I am not trying to be clever or to split hairs with this image. I am attempting to make an important point.

Suppose there was a biography about my wife. What would be better, to purchase a book of Toni’s sayings, or to be married to her for a few days shy of 41 years? The answer is obvious.

The same is true of our relationship with God. Let’s never settle to know true words about God. Let’s experience the Truth, God himself, through the work of Jesus and the presence of the Holy Spirit.

Did you notice that in addition to being able to have a relationship with Truth (God himself), he has given us his Spirit without any limitations. In fact, the way we know God by experience is through the Holy Spirit.

Don’t take this lightly.

John 3.35-36The Father loves the Son and has placed all things in his hands. 36 Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever disobeys the Son will not see life, but must endure God’s wrath.

Eternal life is not just living a long time. Eternal life is both a quality of life and a length of life. Jesus offers eternal life (the quality of life) to his followers the moment they place their trust in him.

Notice how John connects belief and obedience. To disobey the Son of God is the same as not believing in him. To believe in the Son of God is to obey him. The payoff is the best life possible in the here-and-now, followed by heaven.

Today’s Prayer

Dear God, thank you the opportunity to know you, the Truth. Please help us recognize that all we ever wanted in life is captured by living in a friendship relationship with you. Thank you for your indescribable gift.

Your Turn

I am personally challenged to live in the most faithful way I can with God. If I don’t, I am cheating myself out of the best life possible. What about you?
