The Law of Divine Response

Imagine a 70-year-old David thinking back on his life. While he recalls the various high and low points of his life, David includes God in the conversation. At this point in his prayer, David turns his attention to God and meditates on God’s magnificent character.

In today’s blog article, I have provided brief explanations and scripture passages that highlight the character traits that David mentioned. Hopefully, this will be a tool you can use to express your worship of the Lord.

With the loyal you show yourself loyal;
with the blameless you show yourself blameless;
with the pure you show yourself pure,
and with the crooked you show yourself shrewd.
You deliver a humble people,
but your eyes are upon the haughty to bring them down.
Indeed, you are my lamp, O Lord;
the Lord lightens my darkness.
By you I can outrun a troop,
and by my God I can leap over a wall.
(2 Samuel 22:26-30)

God is Loyal

God’s loyalty means that He will never break His word or abandon His commitments. We can depend on him completely.

God’s loyalty is rooted in His very nature. He cannot be anything other than faithful because loyalty is essential to who He is.

“Know therefore that the LORD your God is God, the faithful God who maintains covenant loyalty with those who love him and keep his commandments, to a thousand generations” (Deuteronomy 7:9).

“The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases, his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness” (Lamentations 3:22-23).

If we are faithless, he remains faithful — for he cannot deny himself (2 Timothy 2:13).

God is Blameless

For God to be blameless means that He is completely without fault, sin, or moral imperfection. It speaks to His absolute purity, righteousness, and perfection in all His ways. This means:

  • God has never done wrong and is incapable of doing wrong.
  • All His actions, judgments, and decisions are perfect and just.
  • God is completely separate from sin and evil.
  • When we want to know what is right and good, God is the One who sets the standard.

The Rock, his work is perfect, and all his ways are just. A faithful God, without deceit, just and upright is he (Deuteronomy 32:4).

This God—his way is perfect; the promise of the LORD proves true; he is a shield for all who take refuge in him (Psalm 18:30).

God is Pure

God is all-powerful. If He were not pure, He could inflict all sorts of suffering on humanity. His character of purity insures us that every act of God, including those we don’t understand, comes from a pure heart of love.

As a holy God, He is set apart from all that is sinful or defiled. There is no darkness, evil, or impurity in Him, and His intentions are always good, never selfish or corrupt.

This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light and in him there is no darkness at all (1 John 1:5).

No one, when tempted, should say, ‘I am being tempted by God’; for God cannot be tempted by evil and he himself tempts no one (James 1:13).

God is Shrewd

When we think about God, we know He is not cunning or self-serving like we think of human shrewdness.

When we think of God’s shrewd character, we see it as His perfect wisdom, discernment, and insight.

  • God sees all outcomes and understands all things perfectly.
  • Nothing is hidden from God’s understanding; He discerns all hearts and motives.

He takes the wise in their own craftiness; and the schemes of the wily are brought to a quick end (Job 5:13)

For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, ‘He catches the wise in their craftiness’ (1 Corinthians 3:19).

God is Light

God as light is a frequent designation for His character. It is a way of speaking about His moral purity, truth, revelation, judgment, guidance, and radiance.

This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light and in him there is no darkness at all (1 John 1:5).

The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? (Psalm 27:1).

Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life.” (John 8:12).

I hope you find these scriptures and explanations helpful as you worship God for His magnificent character.
