When God Doesn’t Want To Go To Church

Reading Time: 2 Minutes

Isaiah Says

Isaiah 1.11, 12, and 15

11 What to me is the multitude of your sacrifices?
    says the Lord;
I have had enough of burnt offerings of rams
    and the fat of fed beasts;
I do not delight in the blood of bulls,
    or of lambs, or of goats.

12 When you come to appear before me,
    who asked this from your hand?
    Trample my courts no more;
15 When you stretch out your hands,
    I will hide my eyes from you;
even though you make many prayers,
    I will not listen;
    your hands are full of blood.

Some Thoughts

Isaiah pictures God as viewing our self-deceiving worship as someone who tramples God’s throne-room with filthy shoes. God hides his presence from such religious activity and he does not listen to the prayers of such so-called worship.

Jesus is called “Wonderful Counselor” (Isaiah 9.6), because he is the best counselor in the world. As the greatest counselor of all, Jesus will never burden people with guilt and shame. He is truly the most loving and accepting Being of all.

However, he wouldn’t be our Wonderful Counselor if he didn’t confront our blind spots.

If we approach worship as entertainment, or as a “feel good” experience, or a time to meet with friends, but remain tied to the standards of a corrupt world, then we have a serious problem.

Jesus wants more for us. As our Wonderful Counselor he points out ways of approaching the Father that fail us, so he can lead us to worship that will bless God and us, too.

Today’s Prayer

Dear God, please remove all of my self-deception and show me my true inside condition. Please give me the power to give you the actual worship you deserve.

  1. Father – show me how to worship You!
    “To God be the glory, great things He has done!
    So loved He the world that He gave us His son,
    Who yielded His life an atonement for sin
    And opened the life gate that all may go in.
    Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord! Let the earth hear His voice,
    Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord! Let the people rejoice!
    Come to the Father through Jesus the Son.
    Give Him the glory great things He has done!”

  2. I like this scripture and agree that when you worship God it is not for entertainment purposes or to be taken lightly it’s purely to worship the Lord and give thanks for his many blessings. I love my Church fellowship because I around others that love Jesus in a personal way as I do and they know more about the scripture that I so I laid on their wisdom. Good worship music is a plus for me because it helps me communicate my love for God. No one in the house of God should get more attention and God Himself.

  3. I think by reading this, I understand that we need to be careful of our motives when we come to God. Jesus knows our motive and if its not pure He will not allow it to reach His Father. But in saying that, I believe we all have fallen short in this area a time or two. Thank God for grace and forgiveness.

  4. Thanks Jennifer. I write about my own needs. I like being entertained and I like seeing friends. I need to go further with God and let worship conform me more to the image of Jesus. I join you in being thankful for God’s grace and forgiveness.
