God the Bridge Builder
The big problem for God and for people is communication. It is a matter of getting ideas from where they are to where they are needed. God has the ideas and people need them.
It is true that bridges are not everything, but they are a vital part of everything. God puts his ideas into our minds, and our ideas create telephones, radios, airplanes, the United Nations.
Whether bridges are good or bad depends on who and what goes over them. Then the world’s new nervous system is used by demagogues to pour hate and evil and venom into the world, as is happening now, the bridges are doing harm.
The conflict between intelligence and moral values is now a matter of life and death. Intelligence alone, when not subjected to moral values, leads to monstrosities.
Because our minds and souls are so barren is the reason why we little people have always been leaning on material forces, on guns and power. If we had more spiritual imagination, we would lean on the Spirit.
God Limits Himself
God has built countless bridges to our minds, but He has placed one limitation on himself. He does not cross the last drawbridge into our minds until we invite him. It is a drawbridge which we open and close from within the castle of our souls. Whatever the reason, God’s final problem in bridge building is to get past the portal of our own minds.
Revelation 3.20 – Jesus said, “Listen! I am standing at the door, knocking; if you hear my voice and open the door, I will come in to you and eat with you, and you with me.”
God has made us so that he could enter into our hearts only when we invite him. We are invited to be his children, but we make the decision ourselves whether to be in God’s family or not.
There are two drawbridges in the castle of our soul.
The person within has control of both. One opens up toward God, and the other opens out toward other people.
The Hydroelectric Plant – To work the inlet and the outlet must be open.
The pipe must be open toward God and open down toward people. And then the current flows through and the wheels go round and we work with the power of God.
Many people have opened themselves toward God and have had a marvelous experience for a few minutes or a few hours, but because the pipe was closed at the bottom the Spirit’s flow came to a stop, and they considered what was the matter.
They have opened, they have received a great blessing, and then their Christian life has come to a standstill, and they wondered why. Their little buckets could hold only a small amount, and it was soon full. The infinite resources of heaven were awaiting them; all they had to do was to open the gate at the bottom and to let God flow through.
It doesn’t matter how big heaven is; it matters how big our pipe is and whether it is open. In one respect we are different from a pipe. A pipe cannot decide how big it will be, and we can.
