Readings from Frank Laubach (Part 4)

What is the best way to listen for God’s direction?

Jesus said, “He who is willing shall know.” The first condition of knowing is being willing to hear the truth.

What will God’s direction show us?

Jesus was perfect in love.

In what way was He perfect in love? The further in relationships from ourselves we go, the weaker becomes our love. Jesus loves everyone, everywhere.

Jesus’ love had a healing quality. It turned disease into health.

Jesus love was contagious. It flowed into others and then flowed out from others who came under his spell.

It was not an easy-going affability. It was a mighty force.

The cross is the great symbol of the extent to which Christ will go in his love for us. “No man has greater love than this, that he lay down his life for his friends.”

God showed his great love for us in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

He died for people who did not deserve it and did not appreciate his death. He died to change the hatefulness into lovableness. He did not only for sinners, but for his enemies.

This kind of love, so intense and so selfless, is what Jesus depends on to save the world.

There are three ways to treat enemies that we find advocated in the world today.

(1) Kill them

(2) Get as far away from them as you can.

(3) Try to make them your friends.

(4) Jesus – Let them kill you and keep on loving them. This is how Jesus transforms the lives of people with whom he comes in contact with.

A Jesus-kind-of-love is our only hope of saving our world.

If Jesus loves like that, then we, as children of God, are to love like that. To become like Jesus our present nature must be transformed by Him into an intense passion to help those in need. This is what he means, when he says: “You must be perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect.” See Mathew 5.48.

  1. I warn the new baby Christians, to stay away from people that would drag them into sin. Or hurt them. I urge them to forgive, and give space. They need to grow so that they can be strong enough to withstand what has hurt them so deeply. But I think I’ve grown up enough , now this is my challenge. Asking us to be perfect it’s just a little scary. There are many things I need to get over myself in, and move on. Just figuring out how is difficult, but I’ll keep trying.
