Channels of Spiritual Power by Frank Laubach
The next series of blog articles are notes I have taken from one of the major influences of my life, Frank Laubach. In my opinion, he is one of the most significant men to have lived in my generation.
He dedicated the book, Channels of Spiritual Power, to all who are dissatisfied with what they are doing for the world.
My prayer is that God inspires everyone who reads these notes and calls to his purposes in life.
The Only Way Out
When people turn to God they seem to hear Him say: “You ask me to save the world from catastrophe. I need your help. You must help me to change those evil men who have power to destroy you and your world. I am ready to pour heaven’s help on the world, but I need you and multitudes like you to be my channels.”
How many are willing to sacrifice their own plans and interests in order to help.
Swelling church rolls may or may not represent the religion of Jesus.
The president of a large engineering company said, “I heard you say that in America men and women of large talents devote their efforts to selling gadgets to people who already have too much. That struck home. I have been doing that, and I’m sick of selling people what they do not need when the world is so desperately hungry. I want to devote my engineering skills to helping real need.”
Two things continue to stand out high above all others.
(1) The unthinkable peril for the world.
(2) The uncompromising demand of Jesus Christ to sacrifice self for the cause.
We are always tempted, as Jesus was, to try some surface short-cut cure which will leave our way of life as little disturbed as possible. This world has deep soul-disease, and nothing short of a drastic change in our human nature will save us.
Try to turn our enemies into friends, to change evil men into good men, and remove the causes which produce enemies.
Until we love our neighbor-nations as we love ourselves, we can neither win them as friends nor change their ways.
Lift the millions out of their pit of want, or they will hate us and our system.
America is running for election in the world.
Nobody contradicts that, and yet millions of Americans constantly work against the larger interests of the nation for their own selfish purposes. Nothing will stop their selfishness except the love of Christ.
That is why we need to turn to Christ now. We do not have enough love for the hungry masses unless we get it from Christ.
