The Mind as the Spiritual Eye

How do we purify our spiritual eye?

Jesus said, “The eye is the lamp of the body. So, if your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light; but if your eye is unhealthy, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!” (Matthew 6.22-23).

The physical eye perceives the outward or literal sense of things. The intellect or mind, once purified and re-established in a relationship with God, perceives God and from him receives perfect direction for life. Instead of just being limited to a book or good advice from a friend, the intellect receives intuitive direction from the Spirit.

Psalm 32 describes two ways of receiving God’s direction. God says this to King David, “I will instruct you and teach you in the way which you should go; I will counsel you with My eye upon you” (Verse 8)

God does not want to relate to people, as he tells King David. He says, “Do not be as the horse or as the mule which have no understanding, hose trappings include bit and bridle to hold them in check, otherwise they will not come near to you” (Verse 9).

When grade school children are playing basketball, they often jump up and down, waving their hands, wanting a player to throw the ball to them. NBA players intuitively know where other players are on the court. No one needs to jump and wave their hands. They just know what needs to be done.

God wants his people to know him as well as NBA players know each other. He wants to be able to interact with us through a personal relationship.

Jesus teaches us that we have the opportunity for the Spirit to be our teacher. He said, “I have said these things to you while I am still with you. But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything, and remind you of all that I have said to you” (John 14.25-26).

By plunging the intellect or mind into the light, it becomes light, guided by the Spirit. Consider God’s promise to people who enter into a personal relationship with the Lord.

All your children shall be taught by the Lord, and great shall be the prosperity of your children (Isaiah 54.13).

Think about it!

Anthony Coniaris writes, “By plunging the intellect or mind into the light, it becomes light, guided by the Spirit.” What can we do to plunge our inside condition or intellect or spiritual “eye” into the light? (a) The first step is to have a vision for it. But that is not enough. We need to actively pursue plunging our intellect into the light that Jesus gives us. (b) I think praying the Jesus Prayer on a frequent basis will help me plunge my inside condition or intellect into the light.

A Very Good Book

Anthony Coniaris has written one of the best books I have read in years. The title of his book is, “Controlling and Confronting Thoughts.” Many of my ideas in the blog are reflections of Coniaris’ book. If you have Kindle Unlimited, the book is free. If not, the purchase price on Amazon is $8.99 and well worth the price.

Prayer for Today

Dear God may we plunge our minds and heart into your Light today.
