Malcom Gladwell suggests that 10,000 hours of effort will turn ordinary people into world-class persons. Desire to be a good guitarist? Give it 10,000 hours of effort. Want to learn how to write computer code? Try 10,000 hours of concentrated work? Desire to love God supremely and give love and only love to other people? Once again, devote 10,000 hours and see the results.
Learning Languages and the Guitar
In the 1970s I learned two languages, became a decent runner, and began playing the guitar. I found that two hours of effort each day, given to each of these activities helped me to be fairly proficient. After years of practice, I discovered that I had no rhythm and gave up the guitar. I developed a foot injury the year I ran 1,000 miles and found another sport. The languages, Hebrew and Greek, still serve me today. The principle remains. Two hours a day, every day, makes a significant difference toward developing a masterpiece.
What do you stop doing?
How do we find two hours a day? We all begin our week with 168 hours. Suppose we sleep seven hours a day and work forty hours a week. That leaves 79 hours. Is it possible that we can find fourteen hours out of the remaining 79 to become world-class in the masterpiece of our choice?
Right now, my 79 hours are filled up. The question for me is whether they are filled up with what is most important in life. Can I use fourteen of those 79 hours to intentionally do what Jesus said was a worthy life’s masterpiece goal? Remember, this is what Jesus taught us.
Jesus was asked, “Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest?” Jesus said to him, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the greatest and first commandment. And a second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets” (Matthew 22.36-40).
A 2.7 million dollar lunch
A man recently paid 2.7 million dollars to have a power lunch with Warren Buffet. The money was raised to help a San Francisco charity. Warren Buffet is a very wise man, but he is not the wisest person to walk the face of the earth. If we believe the good news of God’s love, Jesus Christ is the wisest. In addition, he has the best sense of humor (after all he made me), knows the pathway to abundant life, and is the greatest lover of all.
For far less than 2.7 million we can receive daily counsel from him. Here is Jesus’ direction, concerning a most worthy masterpiece of life? Jesus said it well. He directs us to become a world-class lover of God and of other people. The question for me is whether I/we will devote two hours a day to this grand opportunity.
